João Sousa.

João Carlos Sousa is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, and the vice-president of B.ACIS: the center for health innovation of the School of Medicine.

João is co-inventor of a national and a European patent, both in the field of determination of biological metabolites from human fluids and founding member of a recent start-up working in the field of fast spectroscopy-based point-of-care quantification of biological parameters.

João is an evaluator for EC funding agencies and was an evaluator for the Startup Braga acceleration program. Since 2009, João is a principal researcher in the ICVS. He has also published 50 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, has been a PI/Co-PI in projects with net funding of >600k€, and is a team member in more than ten projects that include FP7 grants and research contracts with pharma companies.

Besides that, João has supervised the work of 20 post-docs, Ph.D. and MSc Students, and laboratory technicians. Furthermore, João was in post-doctoral training in the neurobiology of the stress response, and later in the role of the epithelial cells of the choroid plexus in modulating the concentration of key metabolites and proteins at the interface of the blood and the brain barriers.

João was also visiting researcher in the Greg Winter lab in the MRC, Cambridge UK, in the Peng Liang Lab in Vanderbilt University, Nashville US, in the Gabriela Morreale-Escobar lab in IIB Alberto Sols, Universid Autonoma Madrid Spain, in the IGBMC, Strasbourg France, and in Ken Kosik Lab, UCSB, Santa Barbara US.

He has a BSc in Biochemistry (FCUP, 1999), a Ph.D. in Biomedicine (IBMC, ICBAS-UP, 2005), and an Executive Post-Graduation in Project Management (Porto Business School, 2017).
